The Elves of Norrath are blessed with immortality by an Ice Dragon named Lady Vox. In return, the Elves have worshiped Vox, living their lives the way they'd imagine she'd want them to. Thousands of years later, some of her followers began wanting something more. They instead believed in a dark Fire Dragon. Lord Siliskor granted his followers with a greater power... a darker power.
When the Queen of the Elves found these 'Dark Elves,' she banished them from their city of Fayspire and promised them death if they returned to corrupt any more of their people.
As time went on, the Dark Elves hatred for the Light Elves grew. They became hostile toward them, as well as anyone with allegiance to their leaders. They eventually declared war on the Light Elves, and swore they'd take the city of Fayspire and the surrounding forest as their own.
During this time, the Light Elves were having problems of their own. Some of their own were losing loyalty to the Queen. They had the same faith in Lady Vox, but disagreed with the Queen's course of action for the war. These Elves, now known as High Elves, claimed that they were more worthy of the city of Fayspire, and forced the others to the forest where they built the town of Tethelin. The new Wood Elves still have pacts with High Elves, but refuse to be associated with them as a single race. They thought of them as stuck-up, power crazy beings.
Years after the beginning of the Elven War, the High Geomancer, a Human, disappeared from the world of Norrath. The Dark Elves told the Human King that it was the Light Elves who murdered him, and that they were not to be trusted. When questioned, the Light Elves denied it all, but the Humans refused to believe them. They allied with the Dark Elves, and agreed to assist them in the everlasting war.
Toward the beginning of the Elven War, a spiritual vision came to the Light Elves. They believed to have heard the voice of their god, Lady Vox. She told them that one day, the end would come. The war will take lives, and seem to bring nothing but despair. Yet one day, a hero would reveal itself, and bring peace to the world of Norrath. The Light Elves have been waiting for this savior, and will continue to wait until the day comes that they step forward to meet their destiny.
